Are you someone who likes showing your own personal style?  Do you have a good sewing machine and some basic sewing skills? Would you like to create your own custom dog collar to show off your work?

If you answered yes to those questions, you are a perfect candidate for sewing your own custom dog collar creation. Besides a sewing maching, there are a few other items you will need to have on hand. If you don’t have these things at home, you can find them at your local fabric store, or order them from many websites.

You will need the hardware or fittings for a dog collar: You need a side release buckle, Dee ring, and a slider to make the collar adjustable.  If you have an old dog collar, you can take these fittings from it. All of the hardware should fit the same size webbing.

A common size for collars is to use a 1 inch wide webbing. In that case the buckle, Dee ring and slider should all fit 1 inch webbing. If you want a collar that shows up more, use a wider width.

You need to have webbing that is about one foot longer than your dog’s neck. It should be the same size width as the buckles, slide and Dee ring. If you want to add a ribbon down the center of the webbing for decoration, you will also need enough of that as well.

The easiest decoration is to sew a ribbon down the center of your webbing. Stitch it along both sides of the ribbon.  You can add other decorations later if you wish.

Thread one end of your webbing through the Dee ring and through the female side of the buckle. Fold the webbing over about 3 inches from the end, and sew right along the side of the buckle, stitching back and forth several times. Push the Dee ring close to your stitching, and stitch along the other side of the ring. Stitch again close to the end of your webbing as needed.

Thread the webbing through both holes on the slider, then put the webbing through the male end of the buckle. Keeping it flat, loop the webbing back through the center of the slider in such a way that the Slider will work to shorten or lengthen the collar. Stitch securely next to the last loop to hold the webbing onto the slider. Your custom dog collar is now complete!

When designing a dog collar, there are many things you should consider. You first need to know the size and strength of your dog. The collar should match the dog that will be wearing it.

For small dogs, puppies, and toy breeds, using plastic hardware on your collars has many advantages. First off, they are much lighter in weight. This makes it much easier for small dogs and puppies to get used to wearing them.

Of course we all know that puppies grow fast. Even so, we shouldn’t put them in such a large collar that they are uncomfortable wearing it. We want them to associated collars with pleasant things.

Have you ever seen a tiny dog wearing a heavy collar? It’s hard for the poor thing to even hold it’s head up! Using a collar with plastic hardware and a smaller width collar would better fit the small dog’s needs.

Small dogs don’t weigh as much as the larger breeds. They don’t need the extra strength that comes from using metal on their collars. For small dogs, collars made with strong plastic fittings work out much better than the heavier collars that use metal.

On the other hand, if you have a large, strong dog, you will need the extra strength the metal dee ring provides. When lunging, large dogs can easily exert several hundred pounds of force. You will have more peace of mind using stronger fittings on a collar for a larger dog.

Since they are bigger, larger dogs aren’t concerned with the extra weight of collars containing metal fittings like Dee Rings. They won’t notice much difference between the two. Yet you will enjoy greater peace of mind knowing your dog is secure.

Both metal and plastic hardware have their purpose and place. Both function very well for what they are intended. Both are excellent choices for dog collars, depending on the size of the dog.

Dee rings are those little rings shaped like the letter D, so that must be where they got their name. Once you start looking for them, you will find them all over the place. They are very versatile and can be creatively used on many different things.

When used on the ends of fabric, you can create some cute belts.  When I made aprons, I used them on the neck strap so it could be easily adjusted to fit different people. I have also used them on ties on the back of vests so they can be tightened as needed.

Dee rings come in plastic as well as metal.  Of course you should consider the strength of the ring if you will be using it for anything that requires great strength. Of course a plastic one wouldn’t be as strong as a heavy duty metal one.

Heavy duty rings can be secured to solid objects by using a metal or fabric strap. You can find them at the ends of tow ropes and chains. In theater work they are used to lift scenery up or down.

These kinds of rings are also used on horses bridles and saddles. They are on scuba and climbing gear. They are also on some riffles.

More commonly I see them on purses, luggage and backpacks. Dog leashes, collars and fanny packs also usually have some kind of Dee ring. Camera bags often use them to attach their straps.

You can see that these little rings are very versatile and really are used all over the place.  Just remember when you select one, to make sure the strength and type of ring matches what you need it to do. Plastic rings work well for things that will be subjected to a lot of water, such as clothing that will be laundered.

One of the advantages of Dee rings is that they can be used singly such as for hang something or for clipping something else to them. When used in pairs they create a way to wrap the belt or strap between the two so the belt can be tightened and then held secure by the position of the rings. Take a look around you and see how many ways you can find them used.

DEE rings can be used in a variety of ways. They can also be made out of a variety of materials and come in a variety of sizes. You can find thin rings and thick rings.

DEE rings are used for a lot of different things, which is why it is important for them to be made in varying sizes. They are commonly used for dog collars and straps. They are also attached to utility straps to work as a form of anchor.

Dog collars need DEE rings so a leash can be attached to it. Customers appreciate the durability that d-rings provide. D-rings can be coated in different colors to match the dog collar.

Most D-rings are made out of nickel-plated steel. They are also made out of plastic, stainless steel, zinc die cast, and solid brass. Most rings come with a clip for anchoring.

You can find different manufacturers that sell varying styles of DEE rings. There are a lot of advantages to using D-rings. The main advantage is that they can be used with a lot of different products and still be just as effective with one product as another.

D-rings are nice because you can use your dog’s collar to connect a leash to it. The D-ring attaches the leash to the collar. Two D-rings can even be sewn together onto the end of the nylon webbing for a durable strap or a belt.

There are some restrictions involved with using D-rings. You have to be careful that the type of D-ring material you use is correct for that application. Depending on the strength, size, and material you may find some D-rings that are stronger than others.

If you choose to buy a D-ring that is made out of plastic, for example, there is no strength listed for its durability. If you buy steel or brass, on the other hand, it usually lists its strength value. When buying a D-ring be sure to find the most accurate strength level for your circumstance.
